Widely considered one of the most impressive and appealing lepidopterans on Earth, the Madagascar Sunset Moth is famous worldwide and much sought after by collectors. And it’s easy to understand why the moment you see it. The wings are jet black with iridescent red, blue, and green markings, fringed with white scales along the edges, and graced with six elegant flowing tails — a full-spectrum display that seems almost too vivid to be real. Mounted in a warm wood frame at 11×14, this large format presentation gives every shimmering detail the space and prominence it deserves, the natural wood tones providing a rich, organic contrast to the moth’s electric colors.
The vibrant colors are not pigments at all — they are produced entirely by the refraction of light through the microscopic structure of the wing scales , meaning the colors literally shift and change depending on how the light hits them. Every viewing angle is a slightly different experience. The indigenous Malagasy people call this moth Lolonandriana — “noble spirit” or “king spirit” — and few names in the natural world feel more fitting.
