Three extraordinary specimens from three corners of the world — an island off Africa, the Americas, and the Indonesian archipelago — united in one striking black 6×14 frame. Bold, vivid, and wildly different from one another, this trio is a lesson in just how spectacularly varied the natural world can be.
Madagascar Sunset Moth (Chrysiridia rhipheus) — Madagascar — Widely considered one of the most impressive lepidopterans on Earth, its jet black wings blaze with iridescent red, blue, and green markings produced entirely by structural coloration — not pigment — and finished with six elegant flowing tails. A moth so beautiful it was originally described as a butterfly.
Papilio thoas (King Swallowtail) — Americas — A commanding large swallowtail with a wingspan of up to 5.5 inches, its rich dark brown wings are dramatically swept by bold yellow bands and rows of yellow arcuate spots, with long caudal tails giving it a regal silhouette. Found across the Americas from southern Texas to Argentina, it earns its royal name.
Papilio lorquinianus (Sea Green / Radiant Swallowtail) — Indonesia — A shimmering marvel whose colors shift from neon blue to shimmering aqua green to freshly watered grass green depending on the angle of light. This iridescence comes not from pigment but from microscopic wing scale architecture that refracts light differently at every angle — making it look different every time you walk past it.
