Small in size but absolutely extraordinary in detail, Callicore eunomia — known as the Eunomia Eighty-Eight or Numberwing — is one of nature’s most cleverly designed butterflies. The upperside forewings blaze with bright orange across the basal half, with a white spot in the apical area, while the hindwings are dark brown with a brilliant reflective blue sheen. Flip it over and the real magic reveals itself: the hindwing underside bears a pattern of bluish dots surrounded by black that resembles the number “88” — the signature marking that gives this entire group of butterflies their beloved common name.
Mounted beneath a clear glass dome on a natural cork base, the dome display showcases both sides of this gem beautifully, letting the vivid orange topside and the iconic numbered underside be appreciated from every angle. Native to the upper Amazonian region, from Colombia and Guyana south to Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia , this is a butterfly that packs an astonishing amount of personality and artistry into a wingspan of just over an inch.
