Bold, jewel-toned, and unlike anything you’d expect from a butterfly this size, Delias timorensis — commonly known as a Jezebel — earns its dramatic nickname. The underside is a spectacular display of vivid yellow with sweeping red curved bands across the hindwings, all set against rich black wings with white patching — colors so striking they function as a warning to predators that this butterfly is not to be trifled with. The topside, by contrast, is predominantly white with black frosted tips and wing edges , giving the butterfly an almost split personality that makes every angle a new discovery. Mounted beneath a clear glass dome on a natural cork base, both sides can be appreciated as the light catches the specimen from different directions.
Native to Timor Island and the surrounding Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia , this gem of the Australasian tropics belongs to one of the most colorful butterfly genera on Earth — with over 250 known species, all celebrated for their vivid undersides. Its brilliant yellow and red coloring is aposematic, advertising its toxicity to predators and allowing it to rest and feed with remarkable fearlessness.
