The Madagascar Giant Swallowtail (Pharmacophagus antenor) is the only species in its genus — a one-of-a-kind butterfly found nowhere else on Earth but Madagascar.  This spectacular specimen, with a ~4-inch wingspan, is mounted in a generous deep black 15×12 shadow box that lets the butterfly command the space it deserves, with plenty of dramatic negative space to highlight every stunning detail.
The wings are a rich black adorned with cream spots, with soft red lining the hindwings and a beautiful ombré effect that fades from cream to black — sometimes with a subtle iridescent sheen.  The result is a butterfly that is elegant, unusual, and unlike anything in a typical collection. The deep black frame echoes the butterfly’s own wing coloring, creating a seamless, gallery-quality presentation.
Like all swallowtails, Pharmacophagus antenor gets its name from the elongated hindwing tails that help divert predator attacks  — a beautiful evolutionary trick that also gives this butterfly its dramatic, distinctive silhouette on the wing.
