One of the rarest butterflies on Earth, Rothschild’s Birdwing (Ornithoptera rothschildi) is a prize specimen among serious collectors. Endemic exclusively to the Arfak Mountains of Western New Guinea, it has the most restricted distribution of all birdwing butterflies — found nowhere else in the world.
This stunning specimen spans an impressive 6 inches across. Rich dark brown forewings with creamy white spots give way to hindwings with a bold central patch of golden yellow edged in black — a striking, elegant color palette that looks magnificent against the warm deep wood grain of the 9×9 shadow box frame.
Named in honor of Lord Walter Rothschild, who financed early 1900s expeditions to New Guinea in the golden age of natural history exploration , this butterfly carries as much history as it does beauty.
