Grand in scale and arresting in color, Papilio deiphobus deiphontes is a jewel of the Indonesian archipelago — a large, commanding swallowtail that looks nothing short of magnificent in a deep black 11×14 frame. With a wingspan of 130–160 mm, the male’s upperside features a striking broad band of light blue stripes across the hindwing against a rich, velvety black ground color, while the underside patches are a brilliant red — a dramatic interplay of deep black, electric blue, and fiery red that rewards every close look. The generous 11×14 frame provides sweeping visual breathing room around the specimen, making it feel as much a gallery piece as a natural history display.

This subspecies, deiphontes, is found across Sumatra, Morotai, Ternate, Halmahera, and Bachan in the Indonesian island chain — one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. Named for Deiphobus, a prince of Troy and son of Priam in Greek mythology — said to be the greatest of Priam’s sons after Hector and Paris — this butterfly carries a name as impressive as its appearance.
